Promoting Integrity at the Classroom Level:
Hold Class Discussions
In their study "ESL Writers Discuss Plagiarism: The Social Construct of Ideologies," Evans and Youmans (2000) conclude that student to student and student to instructor discussions must take place because "such discourse is likely to serve as a site for individuals to construct their ideologies concerning such crucial academic constructs as plagiarism." Although their study focused on plagiarism, it is reasonable to assume that class discussions on ethical behavior would have a similar positive result.
Some topics for class discussion include:
- Bill Taylor's "Letter to My Students"
- Plagiarism/Academic Integrity Quiz
- "If I were an instructor with integrity""
- Code of Conduct for Discipline
- Case Studies
- International Center for Academic Integrity Web Site
