Promoting Integrity at the Classroom Level:
Discuss Instructor

"If I were..."

Ask students to answer the following question: "If I say I am an instructor who practices integrity, what expectations do you have of me?" After students have compiled their lists, discuss the qualities in class and give examples as how you exhibit — or will exhibit — them during the semester.

Integrity in Our Discipline

Another version of this discussion would be to ask students to "List the qualities you would expect from someone in our profession [e.g. professor, accountant, scientist] who acts with integrity." Discuss their ideas. You might also distribute the code of conduct for your profession.

Syllabus Review

A third possibility is to ask the students what types of values or worldview are exhibited in the syllabus. Ask them to discuss what insights the syllabus gives about you. Ideally, professors should personalize the syllabus to reflect their personalities and teaching styles. Resources for Researchers provides a "Syllabus Review Worksheet" you could use as part of this discussion.
