Bound Journals

A bound journal can be a good place to keep research notes for a short project that does not involve many resources. The advantage of a bound journal is that you can record notes, thoughts, and drafts in one convenient location. The disadvantage is that you cannot shuffle the pages of a journal like you can with note cards.

During my life, I have kept a variety of journals; some personal, some professional, and some a combination. The journal passage shown here was written while I was in graduate school. Even though I cannot flip through the pages of a journal in the same way I can with research notes, the act of writing down my thoughts helps me process the information I am learning.
