Annotate Source

Generally, it is a good idea to write a brief annotation or summary on the back of your bibliographic note card for two reasons.

First, the annotation will help you remember what is included in that specific source.

Second, by writing a summary of the source, you will help insure that you understand the author's main point, thesis, or argument.

Third, in research papers, you often need to briefly summarize another author's argument. Therefore, the annotation might end up as a passage in your paper.

Finally, some instructors will assign an annotated bibliography as part of the research process. If you have one of those instructors, annotating your sources as soon as yo read them will make compiling the bibliography much easier.
