Cottingley Fairies
This example was recommended by Ryan Masters.
In 1917 and 1920, Elsie Wright (1901–1988) and Frances Griffiths (1907–1986) took a series of five photographs that showed them interacting with fairies. The photographs were accepted as real by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and he used them to illustrate two articles he published in The Strand Magazine.
Sixty years after they were taken Wright adn Griffiths admitted that the photographs had been faked.
