Title Page
IMPORTANT NOTICE: The Modern Language Association updated their guidelines on April 1, 2016. We have not yet updated this section of Resources for Researchers to reflect these changes. We have ordered a copy of the new guidelines and will update as soon as possible.
A research paper in MLA format does not require a title page. However, some instructors will require a title page for their classes. If your professor requires a title page, follow the directions that he or she gives to you.
Instead of a title page, the following information appears in the upper left corner of the first page.
- Your name
- Your professor's name
- Course number
- Date
The following rules apply to the title of your paper.
- Double space after the date and then center your title
- Capitalize only key words; not the entire title
- Do not underline title
- Do not put title italics
- Do not enclose title in quotation marks
- Do not put a period at the end of the title
