Promoting Integrity at the Classroom Level:
Develop Grading Rubrics

Jamie McKenzie (1998) argues that "Grading rubrics which lay-out the paper/project criteria from the beginning are invaluable to students trying to conquer challenging cognitive tasks.

Students are less likely to cheat if they understand an assignment. Therefore, the clearer the directions for an assignment, the more likely a student will act with integrity.

One of the difficulties my students have encountered is that I do not provide such rubrics because I want projects to grow out of class discussions and research. I also like to provide multiple ways for students to meet core competencies. Instead of providing rubrics, I send out class notes each day that include information that help students understand class processes and procedures.

Core Skills Rubric

Even though it is not a grading rubric, the The Core Skills Writing Rubric helps students understand the elements of a successful paper.
