Explanation
According to Section 107 of the Copyright Law, a teacher may make a single copy of the following to be used in "his or her scholarly research or use in teaching or preparation to teach a class."
A chapter from a book
- An article from a periodical or newspaper;
- A short story, short essay or short poem, whether or not from a collective work
- A chart, graph, diagram, drawing, cartoon or picture from a book, periodical, or newspaper.
As long as they do not exceed more than one copy per student enrolled in a course, a teacher may make multiple copies of copyrighted materials for classroom use or disucssion as long as
- The copying meets the tests of brevity and spontaneity.
- Meets the cumulative effect test
- Each copy includes a notice of copyright.
