Use Quotation Marks
Around Quoted Material

Be sure to put quotation marks around any notes or portions of notes that you take word-for-word from a text. Remember that even when you are paraphrasing a text, if you use three or more words in a row from the original source, you should put them in quote marks. And sometimes even a unique two word phrase requires quote marks. If you make a mistake, you want to err on the side of caution.

The note card below is from Cindy Champnella's The Waiting Child. Even though I am paraphrasing Ms. Champnella's text, notice that I put "never met this older woman before" in quotation marks because these are Ms. Champnella's exact words. They are not mine. Later, if I decide to use this material in a paper, I know exactly where my words end and Ms. Champnella's begin.
