Promoting Integrity in Assignments:
Consider Alternate Formats

In "It's How We've Always Done It," I cite a student who was surprised when he learned there was not a formal research paper required in my history course. He thought that history courses always required research paper. Later in the blog entry I discussed having breakfast with a retired school teacher:

She mentioned a local school district where fifth grade students are creating videos on environmental issues. These students are too young to know how things have always been done and are comfortable with reporting their research in a video format.

Instead of requiring students to write a formal paper, you can consider requiring a digital literacy project. In "Digital Literacy: Projects," you will find examples of digital literacy projects that can incorporated into your class. It is difficult to plagiarize such a project.
