Promoting Integrity in Assignments:
Combine with Campus Activity

By linking a paper or project to a campus event or activity, you can be certain that there is not a previous publication that can be plagiarized. Unless they could find someone who attended the event, students could not have someone &mdsh; such as a paper mill cite — do their work for them.

Some of the ways that I have done this is the past include

  • After attending a presentation on Russian poetry, my early modern world students were assigned to select a poem from our historical period which they then presented to the class. During their presentation, they were required to make specific references to the types of analysis done by the students who presented on Russian poetry.

  • I have had students analyze the displays at School Daze in terms of the communication theory we had discussed in class.

  • I have not done this, but I am aware that colleagues have had students write various types of reaction papers in which they incorporated quotations from interviews conducted at School Daze.

  • I took my ancient world history students to Temple Grandin (2010) when it was screened on our campus. For homework, I assigned them "to take on the role of the professor and prepare a brief presentation during which you explain how you see our study of the ancient world being positively influenced by this film."

  • Because students do their own presentations in class, I often have them analyze the effectiveness of the presentation we attended.

Prior to attending a presentation on Idlewild, Michigan, I asked students to do research to answer the question, "Why should be care about Idlewild?" After the presentation, I asked students to evaluate the presentation on what had and had not been included.
