Item Favoring Fair Use

Criticism

Explanation

There is a joke that if using excerpts from a copyrighted publication were not considered fair use, then no author would ever get a bad review. Although using copyrighted text in criticism is permitted, you must remember that one of the criteria that copyright law uses to determine fair use is the "amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole." If you were to copy an entire article as part of your criticism, you likely violate fair use.
