Step 7:
Get Feedback

Faculty

As part of the class, don't be surprised if your professor requires you to submit the draft of your paper for evaluation. Even if this is not a required part of the course, you can still ask him/her to review your manuscript and give you feedback. But don't try to have such a discussion with your instructor just before or immediately after class. Make an appointment or stop by his/her office during office hours.

Friends

Friends can be great peer editors; especially if they have taken English 102 or have previously written a research paper. Regardless of the class for which you are writing your paper, you and your team mates might also want to consult the Core Skills Writing Rubric.

Relatives

If you decide to use a relative as a peer editor, you need to be sure that he/she is able to point out strong points in your paper as well as to give constructive suggestions for improvement. And you need to make sure that you will not get too emotionally upset if the person is critical.

I have known students whose parent was unable to say more than "this is great" when asked to read a paper. One student told me that she and her boyfriend got into a fight when she tried to edit his paper. Next time he asks me for help, she explained, "I'm sending him to a Writing Fellow."

Writing Fellows

Writing Fellows are Schoolcraft College students whom have received specialized training in order to assist other students with written assignments. They can provide direction about how to improve the quality of your written work but will not proofread or do the writing for you.

On 11 July 2013, Congressman Mark Takano posted the following in There Will be Charts: "A draft letter by Republican members to Speaker Boehner is circulating congress looking for cosigners. I thought I'd offer my edits to the author before they submitted their final version"¦ Still not signing it."
