Drafting Your Paper:
Writing the Opening Paragraph

The Schoolcraft College English Department's quality standards for research papers says that

A satisfactory introduction provides necessary background information, names or limits the topic or scope of the paper, and suggests or states a thesis.

For many people, writing the opening paragraph of a research paper is the hardest part of the writing process.
